SPECIALIST HIGH SKILLS MAJOR
The Specialist High Skills Major is part of the Student Success Strategy initiative which focuses on expanding quality learning opportunities and supporting success for all students. The SHSM is a Ministry approved specialized program that allows students to focus their learning on a specific economic sector while meeting the requirements for the OSSD. This career focused program is also designed to help prepare students to make the transition from secondary school to apprenticeship training, college, university, or the workplace. An SHSM enables students to gain sector specific skills and knowledge in the context of engaging, career related learning environments.
RDHS offers two Specialist High Skills Majors:
This opportunity is available to senior students pursuing all pathways, including; apprenticeship, college, university and the workplace. Students pursuing a SHSM will select from a bundle of required credits focused on sector specific knowledge and skills.
1. Health and Wellness
If you are interested in working, or pursuing post-secondary education in the following fields, the Specialist High Skills Major Health and Wellness option might be for you.
- Child and Youth Worker
- Physiotherapy
- Certified Personal Trainer
- Sports Psychology Consultant
- Lifeguard
- Outdoor Guide
- Physical Education Teacher
- Etc…
2. Agriculture
The Specialist High Skills Major (SHSM) program in Agriculture gives students an opportunity to specialize, gain qualifications, and plan a career pathway in various areas of the Agriculture sector while still in high school. The SHSM Program has many required components, designed to give students a “leg-up” to pursue post-secondary opportunities in each of the identified sectors, valuing apprenticeship, college, university and the work place.
