Journey to the Learning Commons

In 2009, the Upper Canada District School Board (UCDSB) embarked on a journey to re-imagine the role school libraries play in 21st century education. After seeking input from students, parents, educators, community leaders, and public organizations, and researching best practices and models of innovative learning, the Learning Commons Model was adopted. So our school library has a new name: The Learning Commons (LC).

Physical spaces are being re-configured to support the collaborative nature of learning. Mobile technology is being used in classrooms and learning commons for research, exploration and as tools for knowledge creation. Partnerships and collaborations are being formed, so that everyone in the school environment becomes a 'learner'. We are excited about this initiative and hope you are too!

The Learning Commons Team

The Learning Commons is all about viewing everyone in the school-community as a learner and a contributor to the learning commons vision. That said there is a team of dedicated Learning Commons Informationists (LCIs) in every school working to create an environment of exploration, discovery and success. Visit your school's Learning Commons (LC) and get to know your LCI. They are your ticket to school success!

The Virtual Learning Commons website (VLC) is just one example of the transformation of our school libraries.

What's Inside the VLC website:

The VLC is a space for our whole school community to Discover, Collaborate & Create!

Inside you'll find videos, websites, games, cool software, online homework help, book club discussions & lots more. This is a space for you - so send us your ideas, showcase your projects, suggest a book, take a poll, and join a discussion group. Hey, you can even help us design some of the website!

Teachers & parents - the VLC is also a resource for you - either at home or in the classroom. We are working on adding learning resources, software tips, tech 'how to's', lesson plan ideas, health & wellness and a range of useful information geared to the whole school 'learning' community.

So...let us know what you think! Add your comments or e-mail the VLC team. Send your art, videos and projects to [email protected] or to your school's LCI.
